La Jolla Cove, California Photos

La Jolla Cove was the first beach we went to on our recent San Diego vacation, the early morning clouds were out but it was still lovely weather for swimming in the ocean.  R fell asleep on the way so my husband stayed with him while E and I explored a little bit.  The shot above is the cove as you walk to it from parking on a hill.  To the right are seals sitting on a rock, not that you can see it with this cell phone shot.  We didn’t take our real camera because there was plenty to lug along already and sand and lenses don’t mix well.  (Random tip: put your cellphone in a ziploc baggie, you can still use it but it is protected from the elements a little bit).

There were grassy areas to look out on the ocean and balconies like this one where you can see the seagull peeking up at E.  There is a stairway down to the cove and you can see people snorkeling and swimming.  E couldn’t get enough of the ocean and it was R’s first time at the ocean (E’s first exposure was in February of ’10 in Monterey, California).  My husband even got to float in the water for a time, he looked pretty blissful.  Later that day we went to Torrey Pines State Reserve which had a more classic beach but I liked the privacy of La Jolla Cove.  They also had free showers and bathroom facilities close by.

When traveling to beaches with family you’ll want a short walk from the car and bathroom facilities, among other things, so we skipped more popular beaches like Coronado when we took our requirements into consideration.  I think days like this remind us that experiences are more important than “stuff” and even though traveling with kids is not easy, you have to stretch out of your comfort zone and make time to have a little adventure now and then.

  1. Thanks for the tips! We won’t be going until early October, so probably no swimming, but there will still be lots of walking around on the beach.

    1. I have a really good walking trail for you, will post it soon, it has a beach and a classic winding trail. October should still be nice, the afternoons warm well even in fall I think.

      1. October is my favorite month of the year, here and most places in the southwest. The last time we were in San Diego it was late October and the weather was great!
